I Only Looked Free

Stepped on every landmine heart;
Kept walking. Bloody rivulets trickle
Sea to Creek to Moor.
Blistered wind rapes my face. Still

Softer than your laughter
Skulking away. My mouth twists
Ancient words better left unsaid
Now. Apologize

But you don’t really want it to
End. That means you were wrong.
Slurped my sweet praise, my imperial confidence;
Lashed me with barbed-wire chain.

Seared my eyelashes. Cracked my ears.
Crushed my empty bones. Do you need
Me bloody and scorned to survive your
Wild Life?

Broken open my pristine skin. Slashed my larynx.
Never enough for you. I paid with every
Rusted tear. You were wrong.
I only looked free.
